Georgina Newton
From Brokenness to Redemption

My name is Georgina Newton. I was born in 1976 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Raised by army parents, we travelled a lot, and most of my childhood was spent living in Hong Kong, with holidays across the globe. By 1987, my parents split, and my mother brought us back to England to live permanently, to be closer to her family. As a small girl, stability was not something I knew a lot about. Things were always changing. We moved from temporary accommodation in Blackheath to Woolwich. I missed my dad and Hong Kong dearly.
By the age of 15, I was in full disruptive rebel mode. I was drinking, bunking school, having numerous boyfriends, and self-harming. I had spiralled out of control. Fast forward to the age of 32: I was now a single mum of two beautiful children and still in the same destructive pattern that I was in at 15—only now drugs had been added into that mix too! I was a wreck.
At the age of 35, I was a failing single mum, neglecting my children, indulging in drink and drugs, with no purpose in life, no hope, no direction. Honestly, I felt no one loved me, and this life was evil. I remember one specific night just crying and crying, screaming out about my life.
"Why?"
It was then that I felt a still small voice say my name. All of a sudden, I felt a wave of love, light, and comfort come over me. My tears of grief and despair turned into happiness and joy. "What was this?" I believe that day God had reached out to me.
When reflecting on the brokenness of myself and the world, the problems all became very clear: SIN! I wondered to myself, "How do I get to know God? Is this really Him reaching out to me?" At that time, I was talking to a chap named John on the internet. I excitedly told him about my experiences. Unbeknownst to me, John was studying the Bible. He told me that if I wanted to know God, I had to know Jesus and read the Bible.
So, my journey began. I started reading the Bible, researching it, and understanding it. Day by day, I conversed with John about parts I didn't understand. Day by day, I drew closer to God through His Word. I felt conviction of sin, and a heart of stone became a repentant heart of flesh. Over the next few years, growing with Christ, I began to yearn for fellowship with other believers.
One day, a homeless man named 'Billy the quid' asked me what church I went to after I gave him some change and a gospel tract. "I don't go to church," I told him. All the way home, the Holy Spirit laid conviction in my heart. I needed to find a church!! A good friend of mine used to go to Enon Baptist Church as a child and had fond memories of it. He said to me, "If you want a good church, go to Enon!"
So I checked out their website online. It was local and most importantly, biblically sound. I emailed the Pastor. It was not, however, until some weeks later that I built up the courage to go. You see, I am a heavily tattooed lady, with piercings and all, and rather silly of me, but I was scared I would be judged or frowned upon when walking in.
Looking back, this was a spiritual attack. I had nothing to worry about! Each and every one of us, no matter our appearance, colour, or situation, is a sinner in need of a Saviour.
I will never forget that first Sunday I walked into Enon Baptist Church. It was like coming home. I remember just crying and thanking Jesus as people around me sang the first hymn. This is where I was meant to be. After the service, people came and introduced themselves to me and were warm and welcoming. They immediately felt like family.
I have been coming to Enon Baptist Church for some years now, and I got baptised in July 2023. If you have a curiosity or a calling or need to find a church, come along to Enon Baptist Church. Don't do what I did and let fear or anxieties stop you from a blessing!
Enon has truly been a huge blessing for me, in the fact that it teaches from the Bible in a clear and concise way—nothing added and nothing taken away. The gospel of Jesus Christ in all things, as it should be. The people I have met, the family that they are—my brothers and sisters in Christ—are genuine, lovely, welcoming people who will always welcome you.
Looking back on my life, I can see how every tragedy and every step of the way, every trial and every person that I met, were all leading me here. We often think that we are in control, but above it all is a Sovereign God in control, waiting for us to come to Him and trust in Him.
I am today exactly where I am meant to be—in the loving arms of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour. He has turned my life around and restored my joy, my purpose, my peace through Him. My life is not perfect—not by a long shot—but I am truly loved by the One who is.
So, if you are a believer or just curious about Christianity, come along to Enon Baptist Church. The door is always open—not just to Enon, but to Jesus too.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8
